St. John`s Hospital, Chelmsford revisited…..we love the challenge of a refurb’!

When the opportunity arises, we like to go back and revisit our projects `in the flesh` to see how they have ‘weathered’ over time!

One of EA`s Partners; Chris Longman (a true Chelmsfordian born and bred!), quite relevant to this post given that this is where he came into this world nearly 50 years ago (I know he doesn`t look it!), and his son was one of the last to be born there in the final year before the maternity unit relocated to Broomfield Hospital in 2010. With all the history and the sentimental values that the site has to many, Chris had mixed emotions when we agreed to take on this project!

Chris said "I couldn`t help but feel a sense of peace and tranquillity whilst ambling around this delightful place".

We think that we have ended up with the perfect blend of both converted heritage buildings and new build homes which encapsulate the high quality expansive landscaped areas that include impeccably well maintained and manicured gardens to public spaces which help to characterise this outstanding development. We can honestly say that St. John’s has truly withstood the test of time!

Bowlers Court is an attractive new build residential development comprising of 61 no. 1 & 2 bedroom shared equity and rented apartments located on a former carpark on Springfield Road within the heart of Chelmsford City Centre. EA have been working with our client Stonebond Properties to deliver this development under a Design & Build contract for the Home Group, which is now nearing completion on site.

The planning and design of the project needed particularly careful consideration in regards to the various boundary constraints and irregular shape of the site, in order to realise the site’s full potential. Neighbouring the site are several Grade II listed buildings which dictated that the proposals should complement the classical Georgian vernacular as well as the city’s growing vision for modern and contemporary architecture. A Buff brick façade integrates the development seamlessly with the surrounding Georgian architecture whilst both the zinc and rainscreen cladding compliment the building form in the context of the site. The overall scale of the building form’s design has been heavily influenced by the adjacent Tesco supermarket and multi-storey carpark to the west of the site, as well as the 3 storey Georgian buildings to the East.

Recent images taken of a project in its early stages on site that Evolution Architecture have been working on with our client Fernham Homes, located at their Hillbury Field Development located in Ticehurst, Wadhurst. This 30 no. 2, 3 & 4 bedroom dwelling scheme has been carefully designed to embody the surrounding building typologies and their characteristic qualities to form a small-scale village esque community. The site surrounds a tranquil pond, a series of quaint courtyards and also includes a vast open space area to the south, acting as a buffer between the development and the adjacent ancient woodland. This development has significant constraints in respect of its existing typography. The detailed design process involved a fully considered approach that embraced its dramatic variations in levels, which included sensitive terracing of the built forms against attractive, soft and hard landscape features.

Recent images taken of a project on site that Evolution Architecture have been working with our client Stonebond Properties; a bespoke 27 unit residential development located just off Oaklands Lane, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. This is a brownfield site which was previously used as a nursery for cucumber farming. The new development will deliver a mixture of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom houses, including affordable housing, as well as a large area of public open space.

Evolution Architecture are excited to be working with our client Taylor Wimpey South-East at their Royal Parade development located at Legacy Park in Canterbury, Kent.

This project consists of up to 500-dwellings incorporating a variety of community facilities. These include the refurbishment of 3 No. post WWII structures situated on an old MOD Army Barracks.

EA have been appointed to work with TWSE on the RIBA Stage 4 process which consists of the restoration of the Gymnasium and former Chapel/Band Practice buildings. Sadly, due to its poor condition the Small Arms Trainer building is scheduled to be replaced to replicate its former identity as close as possible. Albeit not listed, these buildings all have local historic and Architectural interest of which the local community have a desire for them to be restored to their former glory. Upon completion, these will be managed by the Howe Park Trust for local community use and will include a creche, local meeting spaces, occasional markets and event spaces.

Here are our latest shots of Chelmer Waterside Peninsula, a landmark project we have been working on over the past 5 years, located in the centre of Chelmsford; a mixed-use development up to 9 storeys, consisting of 446 no. 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments, 5 bedroom townhouses and commercial units. Operations on site are due to be completed this summer.

EA are delighted to be continuing our work with City & Country on the conversion of the Grade II listed former Springfield University Hospital in Tooting, built in the 19th century. Following on from Phase 2; 36 no. residential units within the Engineering, Kitchen and Central blocks, we recently commenced work on Phase 3; 112 no. residential units distributed over the High Trees, RC Chapel, Jubilee Wing, Elm, Oak, Fir and Teak blocks. The conversion involves extensive remodeling of the internal layouts of the buildings and sensitive restoration of the impressive architecture as well as the surrounding gardens. The development will create a new community at this prestigious residential development in South West London.

This is St. May`s Island, It has been rewarding to witness a vibrant community materialise in this unique location. EA have been assisting in the delivery of 314 no. contemporary dwellings which includes a collection of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom terraced, semi-detached houses/apartments, an Extra Care Complex and Children’s Nursery. The project is programmed to be completed next year, looking forward to seeing it when it’s all done.
